Former Liverpool player Xherdan Shaqiri has announced his intention to explore new opportunities in Europe following his departure from Chicago Fire FC.
Despite scoring some explosive goals for Chicago Fire last season, the Switzerland international who struggled in the MLS for almost 2 seasons is now eyeing a return to European soccer.
The 32-year-old expressed his gratitude, stating, “I believe this is the right time for me to explore new opportunities in my career. I want to thank the club and the fans for their support during my time in Chicago. I wish the Fire nothing but success moving forward.”
With the MLS transfer window closing on August 15th, the Chicago Fire faces an uphill task in finding a new Designated Player to fill their former captain’s void.
Meanwhile, the club’s Sporting Director, Georg Heitz who is also set to leave at the end of the season, confirmed the departure: “After discussions with Xherdan Shaqiri, we have mutually agreed that parting ways is in the best interest of all parties.
